Creation 2025

Sometimes pieces take months or years to complete. Maybe they aren’t ready to be in the world yet or maybe the timing needs to be just right.

Collecting the First Cedar Bark of the Season

Every year when I collect cedar bark I create a headband of the first piece that I pull. I created this little tradition when I used to take my mom with me to gather bark for the year. Every year I’d give her a headband. Each year, as I learn more, they have become a little more elaborate with long strands of rope and cedar roses. I think it is a way to honour the teachings she’s passed down and honour the cedar trees and the gifts they give us.

Swan Paddle Inspiration 2025

I am most comfortable with a STAEDTLER .5mm blue mechanical pencil in my hand but have been learning how to draw using a apple pencil and an I Pad.

Creating a new Swan Paddle that will be inspired by the feathers I collected early one morning at a cute little pond. Some mornings this pond is as still and clear as glass but this morning it welcomed groups of beautiful white swans.

Camas Flower and Bumble Paddle October 2024

Women Who Carve is an exhibition at the Steinbrueck Native Gallery. I was invited to create a piece for this year and am working with the Camas flower and a bumble bee. Look out for the purples, coppers, and greens color palette.

Women Who Carve September 2024

I am most comfortable with a STAEDTLER .5mm blue mechanical pencil in my hand but have been learning how to draw using a apple pencil and an I Pad.

I most often chose to depict the incredible beauty of the world around me. For this piece I will refer to the thousands of photos of bees, flowers, water, rocks and the sky that I have taken to use as resources.

I was told to take my own photos as reference material and now I have a vast collection taking up space on all my computers and phone.

The photo is of my mother Jane Marson who is also an artist. In this photo she is working on a totem pole with Simon Charlie.

Queen Bee Paddle August 2024

As we navigate the complexities of population growth and moving into natural areas we need to consider how to protect the balance of life that sustains us. If the bees that pollinate our growing food are in need of protection one would think we would make it a priority to ensure they are protected.

A Traditional Invitation From Songhees and Esquimalt Nations of the lək̓ʷəŋən People. July 2024

I raise my hands up to Florence Dick from Songhees Nation who decolonized the process of working together and rooted this experience in cultural protocols.

Printing My Designs on Materials June 2024

I think I was around the age of five when my mother sat me on her knee and started to teach me how to sew. Perhaps the progression from drawing and coloring to making patterns on material seems obvious. Though these two pieces are not yet sewn into anything yet they sit on the counter waiting to be designed into something beautiful.

For a young girl who grew up in the mountains on Vancouver Island the idea of printing my art on cotton and silks seems so futuristic.

“Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.”
